The Mid Atlantic Hermit Crab Challenge, where the crabs are presented in their own unique decorated displays and judged on their creativity and flair is one of its kind.
The hermit crabs that live in the coastal water and along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and the mid-Atlantic coast are crustaceans.
The Crab is King is one of the most craziest event to hit the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Hundreds of Hermit crabs are brought to take part in race on a special 8 foot track on the beach. They all are competing in the Crustacean 500 for the coveted 'Order of the Mercury Claw' trophy.
The races are organized throughout the day until the semi-finals. Then the championships are held in front of the crowd on the beach and boardwalk.
The Top three fastest crabs are awarded with the trophy and a medal to every participating hermit crab owner.
This is not all, Judging also takes place for the Miss Curvaceous Crustacean Beauty Pageant, where crabs are judged on their creative habitats, painted shells, costumes and even personalities.
Ten finalists crabs are selected and the winner is 'crowned' and crawls down the runway in front of adoring fans.
The competitions are organized for the Biggest Crab, Shyest Crab, Most Athletic Crab, and Most Traveled Crab.
